Apr 21, Two types of blueberries grow well in Florida: rabbiteye and southern highbush. If you’re in the northern half of the state, plant rabbiteye, but if you’re in the southern half, choose the southern highbush. Both kinds of blueberries require acidic, well-drained soils. Plants will benefit from the addition of organic matter and a layer of pine bark mulch.

The general rule is to remove 1/3 to 1/2 of the top of young blueberry plants when transplanting them to the field (Fig. 1). Also remove weak, twiggy, growth near the base of the plant and side branches bearing flower buds. All flower buds should be removed during the first year, either by pruning or rubbing-off.
